The Beer vs. Wine Throwdown

Okay, so this topic has probably been done to death.  There are even books on the subject, examining each and every argument for each side. And there are very good points that each side can make, anecdotal evidence, “scientific” studies, taste offs, and so on. And while that is all well and good, the best way to decide for yourself which you prefer is to just drink them, side by side, preferably with some really good food prepared especially for the beers and wines you are tasting.

But where would someone FIND such a magical place?

Well, this Friday night that place is Fleming’s Prime Steak House in Tampa. You may recall my visit there a few months back when pairing a burger with a variety of beers. On Friday, however, Chef Ryan Mitchell will present a six-course dinner, each one accompanied by a beer from Cigar City Brewing AND a wine from Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. On hand will be Travis Krueger from Cigar City and Kim Jones from Stag’s Leap to guide the lucky diner’s through the pairings and tastings.

Here’s a hint of some of the dishes and beers (and wines) we can expect:

  • Chorizo-Stuffed Dates with smoked bacon, served with Dos Costas Oeste Lemon Imperial Saison and Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc, 2009
  • Duck Leg Confit with fig jam, grilled ramps and lotus root chip, served with Maduro Brown Ale and Hands of Time Napa Valley Red, 2009
  • Porcini-Rubbed Beef Tenderloin with morel, shiitake & portobello ragout, aged balsamic, gruyère and Yukon soufflé served with Kalevipoeg Baltic Porter and Artemis Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 2009

I am very much looking forward to this dinner, for so many reasons. The food from Chef Mitchell will be amazing; I have no doubt about that. His ability to blend flavors and create a dining experience is nothing short of genius. Everyone knows how good Cigar City’s beers are, but not enough people know how well they pair with food. This will be a showcase of what can be done when pairing the right beer with the right food. Stag’s Leap is an excellent winery from Napa Valley, California and I have always enjoyed their wines. It will be a treat to have them side-by-side with great beer and enjoying the differences in what they bring to the dishes.
