St. Pete Oktoberfest: Homebrewers’ Challenge
This year, there is a “pre-event” for St. Pete Oktoberfest: a homebrewer’s challenge. Four local homebrew clubs are participating, pouring a variety of styles that will be judged by a team of ‘celebrity’ judges as well as certified BJCP judges. Brewers will compete in four categories: Brown Ale, Spiced/Pumpkin beer, German Hefeweizen, Oktoberfest, or Stout. Prizes and recognition will be given to brewers who receive the highest score in each category. This event is registered with the American Homebrewers Association and will comply with the BJCP regulations for beer competitions.
Joining me in the judging will be local music icon (and Ale & The Witch regular performer) Geri-X and beer and food enthusiast Lance Eppley. The participating brew clubs are the Brandon Bootleggers, South Tampa’s Special Hoperations, the Dunedin Brewer’s Guild, and the Pinellas Urban Brewer’s (PUB) Guild.
There will be food from local restaurants, live music, and I know these folks know how to make some great beers.
There are still some tickets available for Friday night, as well as some two-day passes for the “Oktoberfest Experience”. The event begins at 7:00pm at the Morean Center for Clay at the Old Train Station at 420 22nd Street South, St. Petersburg.
I am looking forward to being a judge and participating in this event!
